Job Title: Accountant
Locations: Adamawa, Gombe, Yobe, and Maiduguri - Borno
Employment Type: Full-time Position Summary
The Accountant is responsible for the day-to-day financial and accounting operations of the Maiduguri Branch, ensuring accurate bookkeeping, timely reporting, and strict compliance with company policy and statutory requirements. The role safeguards branch cash and assets, supports budgeting and cost control, and acts as the key financial liaison between the branch and Head Office, ensuring the branch's accounts are audit-ready at all times.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date books of account for the branch, including ledgers, journals, and supporting schedules. Post and reconcile daily financial transactions, including sales, purchases, receipts, and payments. Ensure all financial transactions are properly authorised, documented, and filed in line with company policy.
Manage branch petty cash, ensuring proper authorisation, documentation, and replenishment. Prepare and perform daily/weekly bank reconciliations for all branch accounts. Monitor branch cash flow and escalate shortfalls or irregularities promptly. Ensure cash and cheques are banked promptly and securely in line with company procedure.
Prepare periodic (daily, weekly, monthly) branch financial reports for submission to Head Office. Prepare monthly management accounts, including income statements, balance sheet items, and variance analysis for the branch. Support the preparation of the branch's annual budget and monitor actual performance against it.
Payables, Receivables & Inventory:
Process supplier invoices and staff expense claims for the branch, ensuring accuracy and appropriate approval. Monitor and follow up on outstanding receivables/debtors for the branch. Support periodic stocktakes and reconcile branch inventory records with financial accounts, where applicable.
Ensure branch financial operations comply with company policies, accounting standards, and relevant statutory/tax regulations. Support internal and external audit exercises by providing accurate records and responding to audit queries. Identify and escalate control weaknesses or compliance risks at branch level.
Support branch-level payroll input and verification, working with Head Office HR/Finance as required. Assist with the computation and timely remittance of statutory deductions (e.g. PAYE, pension) for branch staff, where applicable.
Serve as the primary point of contact for finance-related matters at the branch, liaising with the Branch Manager, Head Office Finance team, vendors, and customers. Respond to finance queries from branch staff and customers in a professional and timely manner.
Person Specification
Bachelor's Degree (HND or BSc) in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field. Professional accounting qualification (e.g. ICAN, ACCA) obtained or in progress is an advantage.
Minimum of 2–4 years' relevant accounting/bookkeeping experience, ideally in a branch or retail finance environment. Experience managing petty cash, bank reconciliations, and day-to-day transaction processing. Prior exposure to statutory compliance and tax remittance processes in Nigeria is an advantage. Experience working with minimal on-site supervision and reporting into a Head Office function.
Sound knowledge of bookkeeping principles and basic accounting standards. Proficient in Microsoft Excel; working knowledge of accounting software (e.g. Sage, QuickBooks, or company ERP) preferred. Good understanding of cash handling controls and reconciliation procedures. Basic knowledge of Nigerian tax and statutory remittance requirements (PAYE, pension, etc.).
Accuracy and attention to detail — maintains precise, error-free financial records. Integrity — trusted to handle cash and sensitive financial information responsibly. Organisation and time management — meets reporting deadlines consistently. Communication — liaises effectively with branch staff, Head Office, and external parties. Problem-solving — identifies and resolves discrepancies proactively. Adaptability — comfortable working independently in a branch setting with periodic Head Office oversight.
Must be a resident of, or willing to relocate to, Maiduguri. Willingness to travel to Head Office or other branches for training/reporting as required. High level of discretion and confidentiality when handling financial data.
