The Youth and Women Peacebuilding Foundation (YAWP Foundation) is a Nigerian-based non-profit organisation incorporated in May 2026, dedicated to building lasting peace and empowering vulnerable communities. We focus on youth, women, and other marginalised groups in fragile and conflict-affected areas. Ouroverall goal is to promote sustainable peace, reduce conflict and violence, and empower individuals and communities, especially youth, women, and vulnerable groups, to achieve economic self-reliance and social cohesion through inclusive development and livelihood opportunities. We are  recruiting to fill the position below:

 Job Title: Communications and Media Officer - Volunteer 

Location: Plateau

Employment Type: Volunteer Job Purpose

The Communications and Media Officer will lead and support the Foundation's internal and external communication, media engagement, digital storytelling, and visibility activities. The officer will be responsible for developing and sharing compelling, accurate, ethical, and audience-friendly content that communicates YAWP Foundation's programmes, achievements, impact, and advocacy messages to communities, partners, donors, government stakeholders, media organisations, and the general public. The position will also support the Foundation's social media platforms, website, publications, campaigns, events, and documentation of programme activities.


Key Responsibilities
Communications and Content Development:

Develop and implement communications and visibility plans in line with YAWP Foundation's strategic objectives. Prepare high-quality content for social media, website, newsletters, reports, brochures, press releases, and other communication materials. Develop human-interest stories, success stories, case studies, testimonials, programme updates, and impact stories. Translate technical programme information into clear and engaging content for different audiences. Ensure consistency in the use of the Foundation's name, logo, messaging, and visual identity.


Social Media and Digital Communications:

Manage and regularly update the Foundation's social media platforms. Develop a content calendar and schedule regular posts. Create engaging content including graphics, photographs, short videos, captions, infographics, and campaign materials. Monitor audience engagement, comments, messages, reach, and other relevant social media analytics. Identify appropriate opportunities for increasing the Foundation's digital visibility and public engagement. Maintain and update website content in collaboration with relevant staff.


Media Relations and Publicity:

Develop and maintain professional relationships with journalists, media houses, bloggers, and relevant communication networks. Prepare press releases, media advisories, statements, talking points, and other media materials. Coordinate media coverage of selected YAWP Foundation events and programme activities. Monitor media coverage relating to the Foundation's work and relevant peacebuilding, youth, women, livelihood, and community development issues. Maintain an up-to-date media contact database.


Programme Documentation:

Work closely with programme teams to document activities, results, lessons learned, and human-interest stories. Attend selected field activities to collect photographs, interviews, testimonials, videos, and other communication materials. Ensure appropriate consent is obtained before using photographs, videos, interviews, or personal stories. Develop communication products that demonstrate programme results and impact.


Events and Campaigns:

Support the communication and visibility aspects of workshops, trainings, conferences, campaigns, community dialogues, and public events. Develop event materials such as banners, invitations, programmes, certificates, social media cards, press releases, and post-event stories. Support media coordination during major organizational events. Contribute to awareness campaigns on peacebuilding, women and youth leadership, conflict prevention, social cohesion, livelihoods, and related issues.


Reports and Publications:

Support the preparation, editing, formatting, and production of organizational publications. Contribute communications sections to programme and donor reports. Develop quarterly or periodic communications and visibility reports. Maintain an organized digital archive of photographs, videos, publications, media coverage, and other communication materials.

Branding, Safeguarding and Ethical Communications;

Ensure all communication materials comply with YAWP Foundation's branding and visibility requirements. Apply safeguarding, confidentiality, informed consent, and "do no harm" principles when collecting and publishing stories and images. Avoid content that could expose beneficiaries, particularly children and vulnerable persons, to stigma, retaliation, discrimination, or security risks. Ensure communications are respectful, inclusive, gender-sensitive, conflict-sensitive, and culturally appropriate.

Qualifications and Experience


Essential:

Bachelor's degree or HND in Mass Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, Media Studies, Development Communication, or a related field. At least 2 years of relevant professional experience in communications, media, journalism, public relations, digital communications, or a similar role. Demonstrated experience managing social media platforms and developing digital content. Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and storytelling skills. Experience documenting projects, events, or community activities. Good understanding of photography, video documentation, and basic graphic design. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Willingness to travel to project locations when required.


Desirable:

Experience working with an NGO, CSO, development organization, or humanitarian organization. Experience in peacebuilding, youth development, women's empowerment, conflict prevention, livelihoods, or community development. Experience working with donors and preparing donor visibility materials. Knowledge of Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, CapCut or similar digital content tools. Experience with website content management systems. Knowledge of social media analytics and digital campaign management. Experience working in Plateau State or other conflict-affected communities in Nigeria.

The officer must demonstrate particular care when communicating about children, survivors of violence, conflict-affected communities, vulnerable persons, and other individuals whose identity or personal information may create risks.
